‘The simple process of focusing on things that are normally taken for granted is a powerful source of creativity.’ (Edward De Bono) Edward de Bono, the originator of lateral thinking, was convinced that creative thinking is a skill that can be learned. He introduced pioneering techniques to enable people to do just that. One of my favourites involves posing a challenge (e.g. how to achieve high levels of engagement in a team meeting), then selecting – or inviting someone else in a group to choose – a completely random object. This could be, for example, a biro pen. De Bono then invites the thinkers to pay no attention to the challenge itself and, instead, to describe anything they notice, feel or associate with the pen: ‘It has a tip – a point’. ‘The tip is sometimes outside and sometimes hidden inside.’ ‘It’s full of ink.’ ‘The ink is blue.’ ‘Blue reminds me of cold.’ ‘The cylinder holds the cartridge.’ ‘The biro is a means to an end.’ ‘It’s used for writing.’ ‘It can also be used for drawing.’ ‘The pen needs to be held.’ De Bono then invites the group to draw on those observations as a stimulus for thinking about the original challenge: ‘How clear and agreed are we on our point, our purpose?’ ‘Which (or whose) ideas are expressed in our meetings and which (or whose) are we missing?’ ‘Who feels involved and who feels left out in the cold?’ ‘What are the outcomes we’re working towards?’ ‘What other benefits could we aim for?’ ‘Who holds us to account?’ When have you used lateral thinking? How did you do it? What did it help achieve?

Great blog, Nick. In the chaotic environment of a surgical ward, lateral thinking isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. I remember vividly a time when we were struggling with delays in surgery prep time, a bottleneck that caused tension between surgical and nursing teams.

Hi Anjali and thank you for sharing such a great example - and what a difference it made! You reminded me of the BBC's TV documentary, 'Can Gerry Robinson Fix the NHS?' It showed how radically-different thinking is needed to bring about radically-different results.

Hi Nick. In cybersecurity, creativity is a weapon. Once, our system flagged a breach attempt. I pulled in my team and used de Bono’s method. Object: a zip tie.

Hi Nick. Love it! We did the pen thing in school. I said pens are like secret agents 'cause they hide their ink. Then we talked about how sometimes we feel invisible at school too. So now, when someone’s quiet, I ask if they wanna play. I think that’s what Mr. De Bono meant, seeing stuff in different ways helps you help people.

As a consultant, I've watched boardrooms suffocate under the weight of business as usual. A recent client (a global tech firm) faced a riddle: their innovation lab wasn’t innovating. I ran a lateral thinking session. Random object: a sponge. “It absorbs.” “Needs wringing out.” “It expands when wet.” “It can clean messes or grow mildew if ignored.” That metaphor turned our whole approach around. We realized the team was absorbing every request but had no wring-out process: no space to breathe, fail or reflect. We restructured their calendar: fewer mandatory sprints, more sandbox time plus cross-team dry-out days.

Hi Priya. Thanks for sharing another great example. On innovation, you reminded me of de Bono's comment that: 'An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.'

Hey Nick. I enjoyed reading your blog and the responses above. Here's my example. Our team was redesigning a healthcare app but engagement was low. Users weren’t filling out their daily health logs. Frustrated, I introduced de Bono’s game. Random object? A backpack.

Hey Nick Wright. Now I ain't one for fancy psycho speak but let me tell you. de Bono’s pen trick? That’s how I wrote my best song. We were stuck writing lyrics for a tune called “Midnight Freight,” and my buddy pulls a rusty horseshoe outta his coat. We start riffin': “A horseshoe’s lucky... but only if ya find it.” “It’s bent, but it holds together.” “Iron shaped by fire.” Dang if that didn't light a fire under us. “Midnight Freight” became a song about folks bent by hard times but still holding on. That horseshoe turned into the heart of the tune. Sometimes thinking sideways helps you hit straight to the soul.

God bless Capital Crypto Recover Services for the marvelous work you did in my life, I have learned the hard way that even the most sensible investors can fall victim to scams. When my USD was stolen, for anyone who has fallen victim to one of the bitcoin binary investment scams that are currently ongoing, I felt betrayal and upset. But then I was reading a post on site when I saw a testimony of Wendy Taylor online who recommended that Capital Crypto Recovery has helped her recover scammed funds within 24 hours. after reaching out to this cyber security firm that was able to help me recover my stolen digital assets and bitcoin. I’m genuinely blown away by their amazing service and professionalism. I never imagined I’d be able to get my money back until I complained to Capital Crypto Recovery Services about my difficulties and gave all of the necessary paperwork. I was astounded that it took them 12 hours to reclaim my stolen money back. Without a doubt, my USDT assets were successfully recovered from the scam platform, Thank you so much Sir, I strongly recommend Capital Crypto Recover for any of your bitcoin recovery, digital funds recovery, hacking, and cybersecurity concerns.
