'Speak to people in a way that if they died the next day, you'd be satisfied with the last thing you said to them. I can’t emphasise this enough.’ (Bohdi Sanders)

It was a lot of fun working with a group of teenage students in Germany today. They were curious to hear a bit about my life and work in different parts of the world so I decided to create a simple wordsearch puzzle to see if they could find all 16 countries I’ve worked in, then invited them to see if they could find those countries on a large world map projected on screen. Their knowledge of geography was definitely better than mine.

Next, I introduced them to 5 different-but-related types of work that I do (coaching, mentoring, facilitation, training and consultancy). To ground the idea in practice, I gave them opportunity to try coaching me and was impressed by how quickly they grasped the principles and were able to apply them. They were curious to hear how I got involved in this type of work, so I shared a potted history of my life, calling, work and career.

Moving on, I invited the group to consider their own job and vocational hopes and aspirations for the future. I posed a list of potential ‘What matters most to me?’ values statements for them to choose from, adapt or add to (e.g. autonomy, salary, status, security, meaning, achievement, relationships) and noticed in their feedback that everyone had included ‘security’ on their list. It felt like a sign of insecure times for these young people.

In closing, I shared a simple career guidance tool (‘When do I feel most alive?’; ‘What am I naturally brilliant at?’; ‘What do I find very easy to learn?’ vs ‘When do I feel most drained of energy?’; ‘What am I absolutely terrible at?’; and ‘What do I find almost impossible to learn?’). 2 students stopped me in the corridor afterwards to ask, ‘How did you find Jesus?’ That was, for me, a personal highlight – and the most important question.

What a beautiful way to weave purpose, faith and vocation together for young minds.

Wow, this is teaching with soul. More of this, please.

Hi Nick. I like your career guidance framework, simple yet effective. I’m not personally religious but I respect how your faith conversation emerged naturally from authentic engagement rather than being imposed. That’s a delicate balance and it sounds like you handled it gracefully.

Your session design aligns closely with findings in transformative learning theory (Mezirow, 2009) and values-based career development (Brown & Lent, 2013). Encouraging students to articulate core values then link these to vocational aspirations fosters identity coherence which is a critical developmental task during adolescence. What I also find striking is the spontaneous emergence of spiritual curiosity at the end. This reflects the meaning-making dimension that Parker Palmer and John Dirkx identify as central to authentic education: where learning becomes an encounter with the self and the transcendent. Beautifully done.

Nick, a wordsearch with 16 countries? I can barely find my car keys. Sounds like a great mix of fun and life lessons though. Those kids are lucky to have you.

Hi Nick. Your opening quote about speaking as if it were the last time strikes at the heart of ethical communication. It frames education not as information transfer, but as a moral act of presence.

The conversation about Jesus wasn’t an endpoint. It was an emergence of meaning born from genuine encounter. Beautifully written.

Teaching geography, purpose and grace all in one go: that’s world-class education. Well done, Nick.

Hi Nick. Your reflection evokes Martin Buber’s concept of the “I–Thou” relationship, the idea that genuine dialogue allows two beings to meet in truth rather than objectification. By inviting students to explore their values and aspirations, you positioned yourself not as an authority dispensing knowledge, but as a co-learner in discovery. The moment when they asked, “How did you find Jesus?” feels like an I–Thou moment, an encounter of spirit, not strategy. It illustrates that education, when guided by love and integrity, becomes a sacred exchange.

The students’ curiosity about Jesus feels less like evangelism and more like recognition. They saw light in you and wanted to know its source. That’s what teaching at its best looks like. Transmission of hope, not just knowledge.
