‘Well-behaved women rarely make history.’ (Laurel Thatcher Ulrich) International Women’s Day. A day to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary contribution of women all over this world and throughout all history. There are so many amazing women who have inspired, stretched and enriched my life: those I’ve known, those I’ve heard or read about and those I’ve only encountered indirectly through the personal-cultural legacy they’ve left behind. This is a shout-out, a thank you, to all women – especially to those who are and feel invisible and unseen; those who live on the frayed and torn edges of societies; those who persevere in the face of poverty, vulnerability and other threats; those who live and love in a way that goes unnoticed and unknown. You humble and challenge me. The world is a better place because you're here.

Hi Nick! What is the point of a women's day when women are thanked and everyone who is not doing so well or who has a difficult life is thought of. Tomorrow they will still have a difficult life and tomorrow no one will think about them. Changes for women won't happen in one day, they have to be fought for every day. I first have to be convinced of the meaning of a women's day.

Hi Kathrin. I don't know if I can convince you...or if I need to. I don't have your lived experience as a woman and I hope my comments and reflections didn't come across as superficial. It's true that change won't happen in a day. Perhaps days like this one, a bit like Christmas, Easter or a birthday, mark something...someone important, in that moment. It's a celebration and a reminder of someone...something...that matters.

I read your article, Nick, thank you for sharing it... Such a gentle and tender heart, maybe we should start thinking .... Of how can we influence many of men out there that put no values in women. My last meeting in Bangladesh left a bitter taste of the cases of talented girls and women we lost in that office bcs the men they report to dont value them at all!!! 😢😓 Women in leadership is not just a dream, as in same cases it happens, but when it happens they dont last long, as they will be shortly pulled down 😢😓

Hi Helena - you're welcome. Yes, it's a complex issue. Unconscious and cultural bias can play a bit part in who and what we perceive as valuable, important, worthwhile etc. You reminded me of, once, an executive team of men who invited me to help them think through how to attract and retain more women in leadership. I asked them if they could see the irony in who and what they were asking...

Hi Nick. Was amazed to learn recently (on quiz programme!) of number of countries who've had multiple female leaders. In my ignorance I was only aware of one - New Zealand! xx

Hi Nick… those of us that are not necessarily making history are hopefully making a difference in our little corner of the Universe. Thank you for noticing… and for being humble enough to really SEE. Keep spreading God’s love & light.
